A Practical Local SEO Checklist for Service Businesses

Illustration of SEO strategy showing a rising staircase of ranking bars with orbiting keyword nodes

Local search is one of the few channels where a smaller business can reliably outrank a larger one. The advantage goes to whoever is most specific, most consistent and most useful to someone searching nearby, right now.

Start with the basics you control

Before any content work, make sure the foundations are solid:

  • Your business name, address and phone number are identical everywhere they appear.
  • Your Google Business Profile is claimed, complete and categorised correctly.
  • Your opening hours are accurate, including holidays.
  • Your site loads quickly and works properly on a phone.

Build a page per service, per area

A single page listing twelve services in six towns will rank for none of them. Give each meaningful service-and-area combination its own page, with genuinely different content: what the job involves locally, typical timescales, and the questions customers in that area actually ask.

Thin duplicate pages with the town name swapped are worse than having no page at all.

What belongs on a service area page

  1. A clear heading naming the service and the area.
  2. A short explanation of the problem you solve.
  3. What is included, and what it typically costs or how pricing works.
  4. Proof: reviews, photos of real work, accreditations.
  5. One obvious way to get in touch.

Earn reviews deliberately

Reviews influence both ranking and the decision to call. Ask every satisfied customer, ask soon after the job, and make it a one-tap process. An automated follow-up message after job completion will collect more reviews than any amount of good intentions.

Keep an eye on the right numbers

Rankings are a means, not the goal. Track calls, form submissions and booked jobs by source, so you can tell the difference between traffic that flatters and traffic that pays.
